Sebastian de Line's artistic practice consists of sculpture, painting and installation.
The 'working or crafting' of a material becomes ritualized into a transformation of the media from its origins into something else.
While investigating new materials for a sculpture, he begins with mapping what each material connotes, what we associate with this particular material and its historical usage. These symbolic associations to a material convey universal meanings which are commonly understood.
The semiotic connotations are a starting point, combined with form, colour and traces from his own hand to create a material story which is more personal and layered. In a way, it is like trying to write a sentence using abstract forms, colour, layers and found objects.
